The accident occurred at approximately 06 p.m. at a construction site in Balkum Thane. The rescue team pulled out the labourers who were trapped in the lift. One of the supporting cables appears to have been snapped and, hence, collapsed from the 40th floor and fell into P-3 (underground level 3 of parking). The lift was under constant surveillance and was serviced under the annual maintenance contract. The last routine maintenance was carried out in August, and checking was done satisfactorily.
The police and the Thane Municipal Corporation took the following actions in response, beginning with the completion of the initial inquiry and filing an accidental death report (ADR). Then they launched an investigation regarding the accident and filed an FIR against the builder. Meanwhile, the Thane Municipal Corporation identified the victims as Mahendra Chaupal (32), Rupesh Kumar Das (21), Haroon Shaikh (47), Mithlesh (35), Karidas (38), and Sunil Kumar Das (21). Unfortunately, the seventh victim hasn't been identified.
Further investigation of this case is ongoing.
