In a heartbreaking incident, an Army Colonel, a Major and a Deputy Superintendent of Police heroically sacrificed their lives in a fierce gunfight with separatist rebels in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir. The fallen heroes, Colonel Manpreet Singh, Commandant of 9 Rashtriya Rifles, Major Ashish Kumar and DSP Humayun Bhat, displayed extraordinary courage in the face of danger.
The tragic encounter occurred during a joint operation carried out by the J&K Police, Army and CRPF after receiving specific intelligence about the presence of militants in the village. Colonel Singh, leading his team bravely, launched the attack but was seriously injured when the terrorists responded with gunfire.
Despite being quickly evacuated to the military hospital, the brave officers still succumbed to their injuries: Col. Singh, a resident of Chandigarh, Maj. Kumar and DSP Bhat made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the security of our country.
