14 Children Electrocuted in Kota During Mahashivratri Celebration, Sustain Burn Injuries

On Friday, While Celebrating Mahashivratri, Fourteen children in Kota sustained burn injuries due to electrocution, as per Police report. The mishap took place in the Sakatpura area within the Kunhari police station's jurisdiction while they were taking part in the 'Shiv Barat' procession and accidentally came into contact with an overhead high-tension power line.

About the Incident

Providing Information about the Incident, Police said, the incident took place on Friday between 11.30am-12 noon when people from the Kaali Basti gathered with their Kalash and where one of the boys, holding a flag atop a 22-feet-high iron rod, touched the high-tension line passing overhead. In an attempt to save that child, all the children present there were electrocuted. Eyewitnesses said that, it was a celebration environment with everyone dancing and singing but suddenly a loud bang was heard with sparks.

Amrita Duhan, superintendent of police (SP), Kota City, said, out of the Fourteen Children, aged 0-14, two of the children sustained severe burn injuries of 100% and 50%, respectively and are critical. The remaining twelve suffered injuries of less than 50%. All the injured children were taken to the MBS Hospital for treatment and were referred to Jaipur. 

SP Duhan stated, "Providing them with appropriate care is the top priority. One has 100% burns and is in critical condition. There has been an investigation started, and the report will reveal any instances of negligence on the part of anyone. The children are all younger than 14 years old, with the exception of the 25-year-old.”

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, expressing sorrow, instructed the district administration to promptly provide assistance and the best medical care to the children affected. The Chief Minister announced that a thorough investigation will be conducted, considering all aspects of the accident.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited the hospital and spoke with the injured children after learning about the tragedy, making sure that medical professionals are directed to treat the injured youngsters properly.

Rajasthan Minister Heeralal Nagar offered his thoughts on the situation, saying, "It is a really unfortunate affair. One child has 100% burns, while the other two have serious injuries. Officials are entrusted with looking into any possible carelessness, and a specialised team has been assembled to provide all available treatment."
