Government Issues Alert on Adverse Reactions to Painkiller Meftal

Meftal is a painkiller that is frequently used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and menstrual cramps. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) has released a drug safety alert alerting medical professionals and patients to watch for adverse effects.

The commission's alert says that medicines have been linked to eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome). This is based on a first look at adverse drug reactions from the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India's (6vPI) database.

Government Issues Alert on Adverse Reactions to Painkiller Meftal

"Medical practitioners, patients, and consumers are recommended to closely monitor the possibility of the above adverse drug reaction (ADR) associated with the use of the suspected drug," reads the advisory that was released on November 30.

If such a response is experienced, the warning recommends that individuals report the issue to the PvPI's national coordination centre under the commission by completing a form on the website www.ipc.gov.in, using the ADR PvPI Android mobile app, or by calling the PvPI Helpline at 1800-180-3024.The IPC, an independent body within the Ministry of Health, establishes guidelines for all medications produced, marketed, and used in India.
