Dengue outbreak in Peru, Health Emergency Declared

Due to a dengue outbreak, Peru on Thursday declared a "health emergency" in 13 departments in the north, centre, and southeast of the nation.

An official announcement stated that the emergency will last for 90 days after the health ministry discovered more than 11,500 cases and 16 fatalities associated with the illness so far in 2023.

As comparison to the same time period in 2022, this constituted a "substantial rise" of 72%.

The nation saw around 72,800 dengue illnesses and 84 fatalities last year.
Tropical illness dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes and can result in high fever, headache, vomiting, discomfort in the muscles and joints, and occasionally even death.
Bolivia, a neighbouring country, also issued a health alert earlier this month due to a total of more than 6,800 cases and 26 deaths.
