Counterfeit medicines worth ₹2 crores seized in Kolkata

Officials from the Health Ministry announced Thursday that a large-scale operation by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and West Bengal state drug regulatory authorities resulted in the seizure of counterfeit common prescription drugs from well-known brands valued at an estimated Rs 2 crore from an unlicensed warehouse in Kolkata.

From the central Kolkata warehouse, one person was taken into custody. The Bankshall Court in Kolkata has sentenced him to judicial custody for a period of 10 days.

According to the official, the fake medications bore the labels of reputed brands such as Augmentin, Pan-D, Pantocid DSR, Urimax-D, Clavam, etc.

A team of officers from CDSCO East Zone, assisted by representatives from the Directorate of Drugs Control, West Bengal, carried out the raid on July 8th. An official said, "Further investigation in the matter is underway."

A Health Ministry official stated that "During the raid, counterfeit medicines, worth about Rs 2 crore of leading manufacturers such as Sun Pharmaceutical, Alkem, Cipla, Glenmark, GSK, Abbott, Novartis, Dr. Reddy's, Aristo were seized from unlicensed premises situated at 82, Moulana Shaukat Ali Street."
