In an extraordinary instance, up to eight fetuses' were discovered in the womb of a baby who was 21 days old during an operation in a local private hospital, according to the doctors. According to Dr Md Imran, who carried out the procedure, the fetuses varied in size from three to five centimetres and were located inside an abdominal cyst.
Based on an article from the National Library of Medicine, it is known as fetus-in-fetu (FIF), a rare condition in which one deformed vertebrate fetus is contained inside the body of its twin.
"As per the papers and journals available so far, one fetus was reported in most of the FIF cases. Case of eight fetuses has not been reported from anywhere yet," reported Dr Imran. He went on to say that FIF is extremely rare, occurring in only a single out of every five lakh infants born.
The baby was born on October 10 at the public hospital in Jharkhand's Ramgarh region. The parents were advised to get the tumour removed immediately by the doctors once they discovered it in the belly since it might cause complications in the stomach. The hospital took the baby in when she was 21 days old. An early diagnosis identified a substance that was lumpy or tumour-like. It stood beneath the diaphragm. On November 1st, the doctors decided to have an operation to remove it. Then, one by one, they found eight fetuses inside the portion.
The process went satisfactory, and also the baby is presently doing well. She will be released in a week as the infant was already kept under surveillance for some time. Rajesh Singh, the administrator of Rani Hospital in Ranchi, said to PTI, "Since it is a rare case, we are preparing it to be published in international journals."
