Dr. Sudipt Laik had always been passionate about animals, especially pets. He graduated in veterinary science and later pursued an MBA in Business Management from the Institute of Rural Management in Anand, Gujarat. With his unique combination of technical and business knowledge, he decided to start a company that would cater to the needs of pets, mainly dogs and cats. Thus, Merapet was born.
The name Merapet was a combination of the words "Mera," meaning mine, and "Pet," meaning animal. The brand evoked an emotional connection between humans and their pets, which was the driving force behind Dr. Laik's decision to start the company. He believed that his technical expertise could help the industry and improve the health of pets in a unique way.
Merapet was an umbrella brand that covered many sub-brands that catered to the needs of pet healthcare, mainly in the nutritional and drug segments. The brand was well-received by pet owners, particularly middle to upper-middle-class families who valued their pets' health and well-being.
Dr. Laik's family had been a significant support system for him. They had imparted education to him, which allowed him to enter the business world. Although no one in his family had ever been in business or even worked in the private sector, his MBA had helped him achieve his goals.
Starting a business was not an easy task, but Dr. Laik enjoyed the freedom and independence it provided him. Although the stress of running a business was present, it was nothing compared to the satisfaction he felt in improving his family's quality of life.
Leadership had come easy to Dr. Laik. He had worked in government services, cooperatives, and for private sector pharmaceutical companies, where he had held leadership roles such as manager, product manager, and senior sales manager. He managed and handled teams of 20-30 people, which provided him with the skills necessary to lead his own company.
Merapet was not just a brand; it was a reflection of Dr. Laik's vision. He wanted to create unique and innovative products that would yield therapeutic results faster and address many unmet health issues. He believed that their products should be natural, with no synthetic colorants, flavors, or preservatives, to make them as palatable as possible.
Dr. Laik had achieved his initial goal of giving his family a quality life. However, he wanted to scale up the business and extend its reach. Merapet had already established a strong presence in the market, and now he wanted to take it to the next level with an omnichannel market presence. He was ready to invest wherever necessary to achieve his vision.
Looking back, Dr. Laik would advise his younger self that getting into business is challenging yet a pleasant journey. He believed that people who wanted to be independent in life should take this path. Although challenges would be met and overcome, there was a lot of freedom and independence to be found.
Dr. Sudipt Laik's passion for animals, coupled with his technical and business expertise, led to the creation of Merapet. His vision of creating unique and innovative products that improve the health and well-being of pets had been well-received by the market.
