The university grants commission (UGC) has warned students that the PhD degree that is offered online is totally invalid, and students and the public should not be fooled by fake advertisements.
The All India Council for Technical Education, which controls higher education institution, has published various advertisements in newspapers that states that certain standards should be maintained in awarding PhD degrees to students. There are some EdTech companies that are offering online PhD courses in collaboration with international educational institutions. However, the degrees are absolutely invalid.
Students and the public should be aware of this and enrol in these courses through UGC norms only. 4-year undergraduate courses have also been introduced, to take admissions to PhD, and entrance exams have been made mandatory for these courses. PhD degrees which are pursued full-time or part-time will be considered as degrees awarded through regular mode. However, the PhD acquired under distance mode is not permitted.
The UGC has also changed the regulations for minimum qualifications for the appointment of teachers and other academic staff in universities. If teachers have done a PhD through online mode then they will not be considered.
Students should have scored a minimum of 55% in undergraduate courses in order to get admission to PhD courses. In this, there is a relaxation of 5 % for SC, ST, OBC and creamy layer categories. The entrance test for these courses will be based on Research/Reasoning/comprehension.
It has been noticed that in India most of the universities are only offering full-time and part-time PhD degree programs. Only a few open universities like IGNOU, and YCMOU are offering a PHD program through distance education mode.
