India sanctions 5-year anti-dumping duty on Chinese steel as import rises 62%

According to a government notification, India on Monday levied an anti-dumping duty on some Chinese steel for five years.

After the steel industry voiced concerns about potential dumping by Chinese sellers on September 4, India's steel secretary, Nagendra Nath Sinha, stated that New Delhi was keeping an eye on the situation regarding steel imports.

"Evidence of export price indicates that the Chinese exporters are exporting the goods to third countries at significantly dumped and injurious prices," said the Finance Ministry's gazette on the reason behind this order of imposing an anti-dumping duty.

China sent 0.6 million metric tonnes of steel to India between April and July, an increase of 62% from the same time last year. South Korea was the largest steel exporter to India during this time.

India imported 2 million metric tonnes of completed steel overall during the period, which is a 23% increase from a year earlier and the highest level since 2020.

The majority of the cold-rolled coil or sheets that China, the biggest manufacturer of steel worldwide was sent to India.
