Airtel faces ₹3.5 Lakh penalty from DoT over Subscriber Verification Allegation

Airtel, India's top telecom company, has been fined over Rs 3.5 lakh by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for violating subscriber verification rules. The company received a notice from the DoT regarding Bihar LSA on January 8, 2024, resulting in a fine of Rs 3,57,000. Airtel informed BSE of the fine.

Airtel reported that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) found a sample customer application form in September 2023, which violated customer verification norms under the license agreement. In response, the company took action. In October 2023, Bharti Airtel's customer count increased by 3.52 lakh, reaching 37.81 crore, a 3.52 lakh increase from the previous year.

As quoted in a report by The Hindu, "We submit the details of notice received by the company from the Department of Telecommunications," Airtel said, informing about the "notice imposing a penalty of ₹3,57,000 for alleged violation of subscriber verification norms". According to a sample customer application form (CAF) audit conducted by the Department of Telecom in September 2023, the company cited an alleged violation of terms and conditions concerning subscriber verification norms under the Licence Agreement.

Recently, Airtel offered a 365-day prepaid plan with a validity of Rs 3,359. This plan provides 2.5 GB of internet data daily, over 912 GB of data annually, unlimited calling and roaming calls for one year, 100 SMS daily sending, unlimited 5G data, Disney Plus Hotstar, and Wynk Music. It also offers unlimited calling and roaming calls.
