Did you know? Coca-Cola’s strategic move to acquire Thums Up in the 1990s is a fascinating business story! 🥤 In the 1990s, Coca-Cola faced a tough competitor in India: Thums Up. Realizing they couldn’t defeat Thums Up, Coca-Cola planned to buy the brand. However, Thums Up refused to sell as their business was thriving. Coca-Cola then discovered that Thums Up only owned 4 out of their 62 bottling factories. By acquiring the 58 factories that Thums Up didn’t own, Coca-Cola strategically weakened Thums Up’s supply chain. As demand for Thums Up increased but they couldn’t supply bottles, they started losing market share. Eventually, Thums Up had to sell their brand. This story highlights the importance of strategic business moves in competitive markets.
