YouTube experiments with an AI chatbot for video interactions

YouTube is testing new generative AI features that aim to enhance the user experience on the platform. One of these features is an AI-powered conversational tool that allows users to ask questions about the video they are watching and receive answers without interrupting the playback. This tool can also provide recommendations for related content. It is currently available to a limited number of users in the US and will be rolled out to more YouTube Premium members on Android devices in the coming weeks.

Another feature being tested is AI-summarised comments. This feature categorises comments on long-form videos based on topics, making it easier for creators to engage in conversations and find inspiration for new content. The topics are derived from published comments and do not include data from comments that are held for review or contain blocked words. Creators have the ability to delete individual comments that are categorised under a topic. However, this experiment is currently only available to a select group of users and is not available on every video.

In addition to these generative AI-backed features, YouTube is also testing a "play something" button on its mobile app. This button plays a random video when users are unsure of what to watch, providing them with a new and unexpected viewing experience.

These new features are part of YouTube's ongoing efforts to leverage AI technology to improve user engagement and satisfaction on the platform. By offering AI-powered conversational tools and summarised comments, YouTube aims to enhance the content consumption experience and provide users with more personalised and relevant recommendations.
