In 2022, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, a powerful AI chatbot that drastically transformed the way people interact with artificial intelligence. Although not the first AI chatbot on the market, ChatGPT gained worldwide attention for its ability to deliver more accurate and relevant information than its predecessors. It quickly became a favorite among users and made headlines across the globe.
The Growing AI Landscape: New Competitors Emerge
As AI technology continued to advance, several major players entered the scene, including Gemini (formerly known as Google Bard), xAI's Grok AI, and Meta AI, which is powered by Llama 3 and 3.1 large language models (LLMs). Meta, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, recently announced the launch of Llama 3.1, which offers enhanced performance compared to other models on the market. Meanwhile, Amazon is also working on a new and improved AI assistant called "Remarkable Alexa," powered by Anthropic’s Claude AI, with an expected launch in October 2024.
Meta's Llama LLM Shows Rapid Growth
In a recent post on Threads, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared that the Llama LLM (large language model) was experiencing faster-than-expected growth. The model saw over 350 million downloads in August 2024, a significant increase compared to July. Zuckerberg also noted a tenfold increase in monthly usage since the start of the year and hinted at upcoming updates and new Llama models.
Reports suggest that Meta AI is closely competing with OpenAI's ChatGPT. According to a report by The Information, Meta AI assistant has approximately 400 million monthly active users (MAUs) and 40 million daily users. Zuckerberg has expressed his ambition for Meta AI, integrated across Meta's platforms, to become the "most used AI assistant" by the end of the year.
OpenAI's Continued Success
Despite Meta's advancements, OpenAI's ChatGPT remains a formidable player in the AI landscape. The company confirmed that ChatGPT now has around 200 million weekly users, having gained nearly 100 million new users in less than a year. While Meta's open-source and customizable models have attracted a large user base, the competition between the two AI giants continues to intensify.
Most Meta apps now support the Meta AI assistant, enabling users to generate both text and images. However, despite the widespread availability, the 400 million user mark achieved by Meta's AI assistant falls short of expectations when considering Meta's global reach of nearly 3 billion users. As the year progresses, it remains to be seen whether Meta can close the gap and fulfill Zuckerberg's vision for the platform.
