India Witnesses Massive Data Breach: Personal Information of 81.5 Cr People leaked

It has been reported that sensitive data of 81.5 crore Indians has leaked on the dark web, marking a major data breach. Millions of Indians' names, phone numbers, Aadhaar and passport details, as well as their temporary and permanent addresses, are reportedly among the stolen data.

A thorough report regarding the breach has been made public by Resecurity, a US-based cybersecurity agency. The agency reports that on October 9, information about the hacking was posted on breach Forums by a hacker going by the username "pwn0001." They declared that 81.5 crore, or 815 million records, were available. The government has not yet provided official confirmation of the data leak.

Millions of personally identifiable information (PII) records, including Aadhaar cards, belonging to Indian citizens were found to be for sale on the Dark Web by Resecurity's HUNTER (HUMINT) team.

The hacker claims to have obtained the data from the COVID-19 test results of the citizens who have registered with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is expected to look into the issue after receiving a complaint from the ICMR, according to the report, even though neither the government nor the ICMR has provided an official response yet.

The data leaked includes the following information about the citizens:

    • Name
    • Fathers Name
    • Phone Number
    • Other Number
    • Passport Number
    • Aadhar Number
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Address
    • District
    • Pincode
    • State

The hacker pwn0001, according to Resecurity, released certain spreadsheets. As evidence, these spreadsheets included parts of Aadhaar data. One of these data sets contained information on one million Indian citizens. Some Aadhaar Card IDs from this piece are said to have been confirmed as authentic by the HUNTER team. They verified them on an official website that allows users to verify the authenticity of Aadhaar details.
