Google has begun to prohibit its Gemini AI chatbot from answering queries on forthcoming general elections in India and other countries. The news comes after Gemini was mired in a series of scandals last month, prompting Google to suspend Gemini's picture-generating capabilities.
Google released the following blog post announcing the change: "We have started to roll out restrictions on the types of election-related queries for which Gemini will return responses. This is because we are being extremely cautious on such an important topic. We take seriously the need to provide accurate information for these kinds of inquiries, and we're always trying to strengthen our security measures."
Election & AI
Notably, the Lok Sabha election dates are expected to be published soon, while the general election could take place in April or May. However, the threat of AI has loomed big over impending elections in India, South Africa, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
The potential use of artificial intelligence technologies to meddle with the political process has sparked debate in the tech world. While artificial intelligence has been deployed in nations such as Pakistan to give imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan a voice, a phony audio recording days before the election in Slovakia sparked outrage.
The Indian government recently expressed its displeasure with Google's Gemini after the chatbot made a contentious comment against the policies of the Modi administration.
Minister of State for IT and Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar responded to the Gemini controversy by saying, "Platforms like Google are significant powers on the internet. For them to do something wrong and then simply say, 'I'm sorry' or 'I apologize' is certainly not what the law expects them to do."
