Walt Disney CEO Invests $1.5 Billion in Epic Games, aims to create a 'Game Universe'

Disney made an investment of $1.5 billion to secure an equity stake in Epic Games, The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games announced this collaboration aims to develop an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe.” 

Disney said, both will work together in a collaborative venture to develop "all-new games and entertainment universes”, which will provide players opportunities to play, watch, shop, and interact with content, characters, and stories from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, and more. It will also function with Fortnite and be a top-notch gaming experience. All of this will be made possible by Unreal Engine.

The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games announced this collaboration aims to develop an “expansive and open games and entertainment universe.” 

The Walt Disney Company CEO, Robert A. Iger expressed enthusiasm about the venture, describing it as Disney's significant foray into the world of gaming. It aims towards creating an universe where users can craft their own Disney stories, express their Disney fandom and share content in a very Disney environment. 

Meanwhile, Tim Sweeney, CEO and Founder of Epic Games, company famous for ‘Fortnite’, highlighted Disney's early involvement in merging the worlds of both Disney and Epic games, within Fortnite and the use of Unreal Engine . However he refrained from providing any specifics on what to anticipate. The partnership builds upon previous collaborations between the two companies, including a Marvel-themed season on Fortnite in 2020.

In recent times, Disney is increasingly investing in gaming, following significant earnings generated from licensing its intellectual property to various game developers. Games like Marvel's Spider-Man have received critical acclaim, with Disney's mobile gaming collection having over 1.5 billion installations globally and nine brands generating over $1 billion in revenue.

This investment resembles Sony's recent $2 billion investment in Fortnite, which helped to bring Lego Fortnite mode to the game. The launch of Lego Fortnite coincided with other ventures like Fortnite Festival, a music game by Rock Band's creators, and Rocket Racing, a racing game developed by the studio behind Rocket League.
