Canon has utilized the capabilities of its RF mount to create the world's first super-telephoto zoom lens, the Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM, which offers an impressive 800mm reach. This lens was launched alongside two other exceptional lenses, the ultra-wide Canon RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM and the remarkable Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z. Additionally, the RF 200-800mm lens can be used with Canon's RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, extending its reach to an incredible 1600mm.
This lens from Canon is part of their "Big White" telephoto collection and comes with weather sealing and a white exterior coating to dissipate heat. However, it's important to note that it is not classified as an L-series lens. Instead, it falls into the category of an affordable super-telephoto lens, positioned between the Canon RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM and the Canon RF 600mm f/11 IS STM. Despite its reasonable price, it offers an impressive focal range.
To enhance its reach, this lens features a strong optical image stabilization system. It provides up to 5.5 stops of compensation when used on its own, and up to 7.5 stops when mounted on a camera with in-body image stabilization.
The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 0.8 meters at 200mm, providing shooting flexibility, and is equipped with a Nano USM motor for fast and quiet autofocus. It incorporates UD (ultra low-dispersion) elements with a low refractive index to reduce chromatic aberration and features a Super Spectra lens coating to minimize ghosting and flare.
Despite its capabilities, the lens remains surprisingly compact, measuring 314mm in length (unextended) and weighing 2,050g. Canon envisions it as an ideal companion for high-end cameras like the Canon EOS R3, R5, and R6 Mark II, as well as APS-C bodies such as the R10 and the R7, which is particularly popular for wildlife photography due to its 1.6x crop factor, offering a maximum potential reach of 2,560mm with a 2x teleconverter.
The Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM will be available for purchase in December for $1899 in the US, £2,299 in the UK, and AU$ 3,499 in Australia.
