Wrestling World C'ships: Antim Panghal wins Bronze & secures Paris Olympic quota

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal shines in Belgrade, Serbia, securing a bronze medal in the women's 53 kg freestyle event at the World Wrestling Championships. This victory not only earns her a place on the podium but also guarantees India a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

At just 19 years old, Panghal exhibited her prowess by defeating Sweden's Emma Malmgren with a decisive 16-6 victory, showcasing her Technical Superiority to claim the bronze medal.

Panghal, the reigning Under-20 World Champion, commenced the match with a commanding 5-0 lead against the Under-23 and Senior European Champion. Although the first round ended in a tie at 6-6, the Indian wrestler dominated the second half, ultimately securing both the match and the coveted medal.

Her journey to this achievement included an impressive 3-2 upset against the reigning world champion, Dominique Olivia Parrish of the United States. Panghal continued her winning streak with a dominant 10-0 victory over Poland's Roksana Marta Zasina and a hard-fought 9-6 win against Russian wrestler Natalia Malysheva in the quarter-finals.

While a close 4-5 loss to Russian wrestler Vanesa Kaladzinskaya in the semi-final didn't deter her spirit, Panghal bounced back with determination to clinch her spot on the podium.

It's worth noting that the Olympic quota secured by Panghal is awarded to the country, not the athlete. Consequently, there is a possibility that another wrestler may represent India in Paris.

Antim Panghal is now gearing up for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, where she will aim to continue her remarkable journey in the world of wrestling.
