Wimbledon Day 4 Updates: Farewell to Andy Murray amid tearful tributes

Day 4 of Wimbledon proved to be a thrilling day of action characterized by intense feelings and abundant tears as the centre court bid farewell to Andy Murray. The three-time Grand Slam winner, two-time Olympic champion, and former world No. 1 said that sharing the court for the first time with his brother was extremely special. He also noted that it was physically difficult but was happy they were able to pull it off. Andy was honoured by several current and former champions who were gathered by the court, including Novak Djokovic, Martina Navratilova, Tim Henman, Iga Swiatek, and John McEnroe.

Andy Murray says it's time to call it a day on his illustrious career after he and his brother, Jamie, were defeated in the first round of the men’s doubles at his final Wimbledon. On Thursday, Andy and Jamie Murray were defeated 7-6 (6), 6-4 on Centre Court by the Australians Rinky Hijikata and John Peers in what is expected to be one of Andy’s final matches of his career. Murray will still participate in the mixed doubles competition with Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon in his final year. 

Arthur Fils advances to his first Grand Slam third-round

At 20 years and 22 days, Arthur Fils became the youngest player to overcome a player ranked in the top 10 at Wimbledon since Rafael Nadal was defeated by Nick Kyrgios in 2014.

Novak Djokovic beat British wildcard Jacob Fearnley 

In a thrilling match, British wildcard Jacob Fearnley scared seven-time champion Novak Djokovic by forcing a fourth set, but in the end, Djokovic emerged a winner. 

Iga Swiatek surpasses Petra Martic

World number one Iga Swiatek defeated Croatian Petra Martic 6-4 6-3 and will now face Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in the third round.

  • After a suspenseful 4-6, 6-1, 7-6[10-8] match against countrywoman Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart emerged victorious.
  • In three close sets, a resurgent Cameron Norrie defeated British No. 1 Jack Draper. 
  • Alexander Zverev comfortably beat Marcos Giron in four sets, while Holger Rune, ranked 15th, defeated Thiago Seyboth Wild 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Elina Svitolina, ranked 21st, defeated Jule Niemeier of Germany 6-3 6-4 to advance to the third round and face 10th seed Ons Jabeur. Last year, Svitolina reached the semifinals.
