BCCI T20I blueprint: Shreyas Iyer to Replace SKY as Captain, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in Line for Debut

Indian cricket is on the verge of a significant transition in its T20I setup, with multiple reports indicating that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to move on from Suryakumar Yadav as captain and hand the leadership reins to Shreyas Iyer ahead of the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.

The decision comes barely three months after Suryakumar led India to a successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign, highlighting the selectors’ long-term vision as they begin planning for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next T20 World Cup cycle. Reports suggest the announcement could coincide with the selection of India’s squad for the Ireland and England T20I assignments.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Successful Yet Short-Lived Captaincy Era

Suryakumar Yadav took over India’s T20I captaincy from Rohit Sharma in July 2024 and enjoyed considerable success as leader. During his tenure, India retained the T20 World Cup title in March 2026, cementing his place among the country’s successful white-ball captains.

However, while the team flourished, Suryakumar’s personal form reportedly became a growing concern for selectors and team management. Multiple reports indicate that the BCCI, selectors, and support staff believe the time has come for a leadership transition despite the recent World Cup triumph.

According to reports quoting BCCI sources, the decision was taken after consultations involving the selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir. The board is understood to have concluded that India should move forward with a new captain as part of its future planning.

A senior BCCI source reportedly stated that although India won the T20 World Cup under Suryakumar’s leadership, concerns surrounding his form and long-term future prompted the decision to look elsewhere.

Poor Batting Returns Trigger Leadership Change

The primary factor behind the move appears to be Suryakumar’s sustained decline with the bat.

Statistics from recent years paint a stark contrast between the explosive batter who dominated world cricket before taking over the captaincy and the player he has become since assuming leadership duties.

Before July 2024, Suryakumar had scored 2,340 runs in 65 T20I innings at an average of 43.33 and a strike rate of 167.74, including four centuries and 19 half-centuries.

Since becoming captain in July 2024, those numbers have reportedly dipped dramatically. Across 42 innings, he has managed 932 runs at an average of 25.88 and a strike rate of 152.03, without registering a century and producing only six fifties.

His performances during the T20 World Cup 2026 also failed to match expectations. While India lifted the trophy, Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine innings at an average of 30.25 and a strike rate of 136.72, figures considered modest by his own lofty standards.

The selectors were reportedly prepared to give him one final opportunity during IPL 2026 to rediscover his touch. Instead, the tournament turned into his poorest IPL campaign in nearly a decade.

Representing Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar scored just 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54, with only two half-centuries. Several reports describe this disappointing IPL season as the tipping point that ultimately convinced the selectors to make a change.

In addition to form concerns, some reports have also mentioned a suspected wrist injury, further complicating his immediate future in the national setup.

Not Just Captaincy, Place in Squad Also Under Threat

The shake-up may extend beyond the captaincy.

Suryakumar could be omitted from India’s T20I squad altogether for the upcoming Ireland and England series. If confirmed, it would mark a dramatic fall for a player who only months ago was celebrating a World Cup triumph as captain.

The BCCI has already signalled a possible shift in direction by reportedly excluding him from the provisional squad submitted for the upcoming Asian Games. That move intensified speculation that the board was preparing a leadership and personnel transition in the shortest format.

Shreyas Iyer Emerges as the Chosen Successor

The biggest beneficiary of the impending reshuffle appears to be Shreyas Iyer.

Despite not being a regular member of India’s T20I side in recent years, Iyer has reportedly emerged as the unanimous choice to lead the team going forward. The decision was discussed at the highest levels of the BCCI and received backing from both selectors and team management.

Interestingly, Iyer has not played a T20I for India since December 2023. Yet his credentials as a leader and middle-order batter have kept him firmly in contention.

The right-hander’s leadership record in franchise cricket has significantly strengthened his case. He guided Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024 and subsequently led Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final. He has continued to captain Punjab Kings during the 2026 season as well.

His recent batting numbers have also been impressive. Reports note that he scored 604 runs during IPL 2025 and followed it up with 498 runs in IPL 2026, reinforcing his claim for a return to India’s T20I side.

According to reports, the BCCI believes Iyer offers both immediate leadership stability and a long-term solution as India builds toward future global tournaments.

Iyer could attend the upcoming selection meeting and officially be unveiled as India’s new T20I captain.

Tilak Varma Set for Vice-Captaincy Role

Alongside Iyer’s elevation, Tilak Varma is reportedly being considered for the vice-captain’s role.

The young left-hander has become one of India’s most promising T20 batters and is viewed as a key part of the team’s future plans. Appointing him deputy would align with the board’s strategy of grooming younger leaders for the next generation.

Tilak’s growing stature within the setup made him a natural candidate for a leadership position as the team enters a new cycle.

Other Names Considered by Selectors

Before finalising Iyer as the preferred candidate, selectors reportedly evaluated several other options.

Axar Patel was considered because he served as Suryakumar’s deputy during the T20 World Cup and already possesses leadership experience. However, reports suggest his stint as captain of Delhi Capitals weakened his case.

Sanju Samson also emerged as a contender due to his extensive captaincy experience with Rajasthan Royals and his consistent presence in India’s T20 plans.

Ishan Kishan’s leadership opportunities with Sunrisers Hyderabad and his return to the national setup reportedly placed him in the conversation as well.

Ultimately, however, selectors are understood to have concluded that Iyer offered the strongest combination of leadership experience, batting consistency and long-term suitability.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Poised for Historic Debut

Another major talking point ahead of squad selection is the expected inclusion of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The youngster is likely to receive his maiden senior India call-up for the Ireland series. If selected and given an opportunity to play, Sooryavanshi could become one of the youngest cricketers ever to represent India in T20 internationals.

His inclusion would represent another significant step in India’s youth-focused transition strategy. The selectors reportedly view him as one of the brightest talents in the country and are keen to fast-track his development at the international level.

The prospect of Sooryavanshi joining a squad led by the newly appointed Iyer and supported by vice-captain Tilak Varma would further underline the changing face of India’s T20 setup.

A Defining Moment for India’s T20 Future

The reported removal of Suryakumar Yadav is undoubtedly one of the most significant selection decisions made by the BCCI in recent years. It demonstrates the board’s willingness to make difficult calls even when they involve a World Cup-winning captain.

While Suryakumar’s leadership delivered silverware, selectors appear convinced that India’s future requires a fresh direction. Shreyas Iyer’s expected appointment, Tilak Varma’s rise into leadership, and the possible debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi collectively signal the beginning of a new era.

With squad announcements for the Ireland and England tours imminent, Indian cricket now stands at a pivotal crossroads—one where recent success is being balanced against long-term planning, and where the next generation is preparing to take centre stage.
