Geetanjali Nagvekar, an exceptional athlete from Kiniyabhat in Porvorim, has brought pride to her nation by winning a gold medal in the Level D 800 metres event at the 2023 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Berlin. The Games began with great enthusiasm, and Nagvekar's remarkable victory has ignited a sense of pride among Goans and Indians alike.
Prior to this, Nagvekar, along with her Goan teammate Asheef Malanur, qualified for the Level D 800 metres and Level B 800 metres events, respectively, setting the stage for their medal aspirations. Victor R. Vaz, the national sports director of Special Olympics Bharat, expressed satisfaction with the athletes' performances, acknowledging the challenges they faced on the global stage. He displayed confidence in the Goan athletes and anticipated a triumphant return home with medals.

Several other Indian athletes also showcased exceptional performances throughout the eight-day competition held across various venues in Berlin. Soham Rajput impressed in the Level C 800-metre final, joining Malanur and Nagvekar in their pursuit of victory. Additionally, the men's 4x400-metre squad secured a place in the finals, and Libin Mallika Rajakumar advanced to the Level B 200-metre event finals. In swimming, six Indian swimmers demonstrated their skills and earned spots in their respective finals. Notable achievements were also seen in women's events, with Prathna reaching the Level 25 metres Freestyle final and Aleena Anthony qualifying for the Level B 50 metres Freestyle final.

The fate of three swimmers - Aleena Anthony, Dinesh Shanmugam, and Abdul Rahman - is yet to be determined as they were scheduled to compete in the finals on Tuesday.Team India, consisting of 13 Goan athletes, participates in various sports such as Futsal, Athletics, Roller Skating, Basketball, Judo, Unified Volleyball, and Handball.The Special Olympics World Summer Games, organized every two years by the global movement dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, has attracted over 7,000 athletes from 190 delegations participating in 26 different sports disciplines in this year's event in Berlin.
