US Open: Novak Djokovic wins his 24th Grand Slam

Novak Djokovic won his fourth US Open and 24th Grand Slam singles title by defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. This victory avenged Djokovic's loss to Medvedev in the final two years ago. At 36 years old, Djokovic became the oldest men's champion in New York in the Open era and matched Margaret Court's all-time record for most Grand Slam victories. He is also the first man to win three Grand Slam events in the same season. This win solidified Djokovic's impending return to the world number-one ranking.

In the 2021 final, Medvedev defeated Djokovic in straight sets, preventing him from achieving a calendar-year Grand Slam. However, Djokovic showed no signs of nerves in this championship match and quickly took control. He broke Medvedev's serve early on and maintained his advantage throughout the match. Medvedev struggled to replicate his best performance and was unable to consistently challenge Djokovic.

Medvedev had a chance to break Djokovic's serve in the second set, but Djokovic blocked it with a brilliant shot. The set went to a tie-break, which Djokovic ultimately won after 104 minutes of marathon play. In the third set, Djokovic took an early lead, and despite a brief comeback from Medvedev, Djokovic sealed the victory and claimed the title.

Throughout the match, Djokovic displayed sportsmanship, offering to help Medvedev after he took a tumble on the court. However, there was no mercy when it came to the game, as Djokovic capitalised on break points to secure his advantage.

This win further solidifies Djokovic's status as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. He now shares the record for most Grand Slam victories with Margaret Court and continues to add to his legacy.
