At the time, Lord's witnessed India's most remarkable cricketing victory as they defeated two-time champions West Indies by a margin of 43 runs, securing the coveted trophy. Even before the commencement of the 1983 World Cup, their performance record was less than remarkable, securing just one victory in four matches against Pakistan and the West Indies. Despite the odds stacked against them, India made a remarkable debut in the tournament by defeating the favoured West Indies in their opening game. In the 1983 Cricket World Cup final, India considered the underdogs, faced the dominant West Indies team. India had surprised everyone with their remarkable journey in the tournament after disappointing performances in previous editions. Having defeated the West Indies in the group stage, India entered the final with the determination to secure their first-ever World Cup title.

The West Indies, two-time defending champions, were the favourites going into the final. However, India's captain Kapil Dev won the toss and chose to bat first. India's batting innings got off to a rocky start as they lost their star player Sunil Gavaskar early. Kris Srikkanth and Mohinder Amarnath stabilized the innings with a 57-run partnership, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals thereafter. Sandeep Patil made a valuable contribution of 27 runs, and the lower-order batsmen chipped in, but India could only manage a modest total of 183 runs in their allotted 60 overs.

The West Indies bowling attack, led by Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, and Michael Holding, put up an impressive performance, taking regular wickets and restricting India's scoring. Chasing 184 to win, the West Indies had a poor start, losing opener Gordon Greenidge early. Balwinder Singh Sandhu provided the breakthrough for India. However, Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards rebuilt the innings with a partnership of 45 runs. Madan Lal dismissed Haynes, and then Kapil Dev took a stunning catch to dismiss Richards. The West Indies continued to lose wickets, and their middle order collapsed under the pressure of Indian bowling. Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath were the standout performers with the ball for India, taking three wickets each. Sandhu and Kapil Dev also contributed with crucial wickets. The West Indies were eventually bowled out for 140 runs, handing India a historic victory by 43 runs.
