Sunil Kumar demonstrated remarkable resilience and emerged victorious in the decathlon, winning the gold medal at the Asian U-20 Athletics Championship held in Yecheon, South Korea. Despite facing a significant setback before his events commenced, Sunil overcame obstacles when both South Korean Airlines and Air India prohibited him from carrying his five-meter-long pole vault due to technical issues. Undeterred by the absence of his own equipment, Sunil borrowed a pole provided by the event organizers and delivered an outstanding performance. He achieved a personal best score of 7003 points, securing first place in the ten-event competition on the second-to-last day of the championship.
After finishing fourth in the event, the Athletics Federation of India intervened and requested the organizers to provide Sunil with a pole. To compensate for his subpar performance in other events, Sunil excelled in the 100m hurdles, discus throw, and javelin throw, ultimately clinching the gold medal in this gruelling discipline, which spanned two days. In the women's high jump, Pooja won a silver medal by clearing a height of 1.82m. Adding to India's success, Bushra Khan earned a silver medal in the women's 3000m race, completing it in a time of 9:41.47s.
The Indian women's 4x100m relay team secured a bronze medal with a time of 45.36s. On the championship's opening day, Rezoana Mallick Heena and Bharatpreet Singh, promising athletes, both claimed gold medals in the women's 400m and men's discus throw, respectively. Furthermore, shot putter Siddharth Choudhary achieved a personal best throw of 19.52m, securing another gold medal on Monday. This remarkable display of resilience, determination, and success by Sunil Kumar and the Indian athletes highlights their exceptional talents and the ability to overcome challenges in pursuit of victory.
