South Africa has secured the last automatic qualification spot for the upcoming World Cup. Ireland's chances of surpassing them were dashed when their first one-day international against Bangladesh was washed out. South Africa's final ODI series against the Netherlands ended in a 2-0 victory, propelling them to the eighth position in the World Cup Super League. Their qualification depended on Ireland not achieving a 3-0 win over Bangladesh, with net run rate also playing a significant role.
Despite Bangladesh, who have already qualified, setting a target of 247 runs for Ireland in 50 overs, the match was called off with Ireland at 65-3 in the 17th over. A minimum of 20 overs was required for a valid result. Alongside hosts India, defending champions England, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, South Africa joins the lineup of qualified teams for the World Cup, which is set to commence in October.
Although Ireland faced a setback, they still have an opportunity to secure a World Cup spot through a 10-team qualifying tournament scheduled for June-July. The tournament includes two former champions, Sri Lanka and the West Indies, among other participating teams.
