South Africa crushes New Zealand, regains top spot in World Cup 2023

In match 32 of the ICC World Cup 2023, New Zealand faced off against South Africa at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Wednesday (November 1). South Africa emerged victorious, defeating New Zealand by a whopping 190 runs. New Zealand struggled to score, managing only 167 runs. South Africa, batting first, put up an impressive total of 357-4 in 50 overs. This win puts South Africa back on top of the table, while New Zealand falls to fourth place after their third consecutive loss.

Stand-in New Zealand captain Tom Latham chose to bowl first after winning the toss, allowing South Africa to play to their strengths and set a formidable total.

Temba Bavuma's team followed their usual strategy, starting steadily and then accelerating in the late innings. After Bavuma's departure, De Kock and Van der Dussen took charge, displaying remarkable control and benefiting from New Zealand's missed opportunities.

De Kock exceeded 500 runs for the tournament, a historic achievement for South Africa, becoming the first batter to do so in a World Cup. Van der Dussen also reached his century, further strengthening their position.

New Zealand faced additional challenges when seamer Matt Henry suffered a hamstring injury. The depleted New Zealand attack allowed David Miller to hit four sixes in his 53 off 30 balls.

South Africa's fast bowlers, led by Marco Jansen with 3-31, inflicted early damage, reducing New Zealand to 67-4. Left-arm spinner Maharaj further emphasized South Africa's dominance as New Zealand crumbled to 110-8.

Glenn Phillips provided some resistance for New Zealand with a defiant half-century, but the game was already out of reach.

South Africa's place in the top four is nearly secure, with both their batting and bowling units performing impressively. In contrast, the injury-plagued Black Caps face a tough battle to advance, holding just a two-point lead over Pakistan and Afghanistan, with crucial matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka ahead.
