Silver Lining: Harmilan Bains shines at Asian Games, following in mother's Footsteps

Harmilan Bains of India secured a silver medal in the women's 1500m event, while Ajay Kumar Saroj and Jinson Johnson clinched silver and bronze respectively in the men's 1500m at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. Bains completed her race in 4:12.74s, while Saroj achieved a time of 3:38.94, and Johnson clocked 3:39.74 in their respective races.

Harmilan's athletic talent runs in her family, with her father, Amandeep Bains, being a South Asian Games medallist in 1500m, and her mother, Madhuri Saxena, having won a silver medal in the 2002 Asian Games in the 800m category.

For Saroj, this silver medal marked a significant achievement as it was his first Asian Games medal. His time of 3:38.94 was just short of his personal best of 3:38.24 set at the World Championships the previous month. Unfortunately, this time couldn't secure gold as he finished second to Qatar's Mohamad Algarni, who clocked 3:38.36 to claim the top spot.

Jinson Johnson, the defending champion, also stood on the podium with a bronze medal, achieving a time of 3:39.74. Saroj's silver was a career highlight for him, given his previous victories as a two-time Asian Champion in the men's 1500m, winning gold in 2017 (3:45.85s) and a silver medal in 2019 (3:43.18s) before securing another gold earlier this year in Bangkok (3:41.51).
