Sidra Amin Loses Cool! ICC Takes Action After Bat-Smashing Incident

Colombo, October 6, 2025 — Pakistan’s top-order batter Sidra Amin has been officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during her side’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 fixture against India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The right-handed batter, one of Pakistan’s most consistent performers, was found guilty of violating Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to the “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

This infraction falls under a Level 1 breach of the Code of Conduct, which is considered the least severe category but still warrants disciplinary action.

What Happened: The Incident in Detail

The incident occurred during the 40th over of Pakistan’s innings while chasing a target of 248 runs set by India. Sidra Amin, who had been Pakistan’s standout performer throughout the innings, was dismissed by Indian spinner Sneh Rana after scoring a valiant 81 off 106 balls.

Frustrated at narrowly missing out on a century and failing to carry her team closer to the target, Sidra reacted by forcefully striking her bat onto the pitch as she walked off. The act was deemed a violation of ICC’s behavioral standards for players, leading to a reprimand and a demerit point being added to her record.

The ICC confirmed in a statement:

“Sidra Amin has been found guilty of breaching Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”

This is Sidra Amin’s first offence within a 24-month period, meaning no prior disciplinary issues had been recorded against her.

ICC’s Decision and Sanctions

The Level 1 breach carries a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can extend up to a fine of 50 per cent of the match fee, along with the addition of one or two demerit points to a player’s record.

In Sidra’s case, she received an official reprimand and one demerit point.

The charge was formally laid by the on-field umpires Lauren Agenbag and Nimali Perera, along with third umpire Kerrin Klaaste and fourth umpire Kim Cotton.

The matter was overseen by Shandré Fritz of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees. Sidra admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction, thereby eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The ICC reiterated that all players are expected to uphold the spirit of the game and maintain discipline, even under emotionally charged situations such as high-stakes World Cup fixtures.

Match Summary: India vs Pakistan, Women’s World Cup 2025

Earlier in the day, Pakistan captain Fatima Sana had won the toss and elected to bowl first, with the pitch under covers due to overnight rain. The strategy appeared to pay off early, as Pakistan restricted India to 247 all out in 50 overs — marking the first time in 12 One Day Internationals (ODIs) that Pakistan had bowled India out in women’s cricket.

Despite the disciplined bowling effort, Pakistan’s batting lineup faltered under pressure. Chasing 248, the team was bundled out for 159 runs in 43 overs, suffering a heavy 88-run defeat — their second successive loss in the tournament.

Sidra Amin, batting at number three after Muneeba Ali’s controversial run-out in the fourth over, played a lone hand. Her composed innings of 81 runs from 106 deliveries included several elegant strokes and steady partnerships, but she received little support from the other end.

It was also the only half-century scored in the entire match, underlining her crucial role in the innings.

India’s victory solidified their dominance in the league stage, helping them climb to the top of the World Cup points table, edging defending champions Australia by one point. India had earlier defeated Sri Lanka in a rain-interrupted encounter in Guwahati last week.

Pakistan, meanwhile, found themselves under increasing pressure, having lost both their opening matches — first to Bangladesh and now to their arch-rivals India.

Historical Context and Rivalry

This match further extended India’s remarkable unbeaten record against Pakistan in women’s ODIs. India have now won all 12 of their meetings in this format — a streak that continues to underline their dominance in South Asian women’s cricket.

Despite this, Pakistan showed glimpses of competitiveness, especially through Sidra Amin’s innings and their disciplined bowling effort that restricted India under 250.

Captain Fatima Sana, speaking at the toss, had said:

“We wanted to bowl first because the pitch was under covers and we thought we could restrict India below 250.”

True to her word, Pakistan managed to do exactly that — but their batting collapse meant that the target, although within reach, proved too steep.

ICC’s Official Statement and Sidra Amin’s Response

Following the game, the ICC issued an official release confirming the disciplinary action. The statement read:

“Pakistan batter Sidra Amin has been found guilty of breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 match against India in Colombo. The incident occurred when the player forcefully hit her bat on the pitch after her dismissal in the 40th over. This constitutes a breach of Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match.”

It further added:

“One demerit point has been added to the player’s disciplinary record. This was her first offence within a 24-month period.”

Sidra accepted the reprimand without contest, showing professionalism in acknowledging her emotional outburst. The ICC appreciated her cooperation, noting that the prompt admission avoided the need for a prolonged hearing process.

Looking Ahead: Pakistan’s Next Challenge

Despite the setback — both in the form of defeat and disciplinary action — Pakistan will aim to bounce back stronger. The team is set to face Australia next on October 8 in Colombo.

The match will be a crucial opportunity for the side to regain momentum in the tournament and keep their semifinal hopes alive. Sidra Amin, Pakistan’s most dependable top-order batter, will once again be expected to lead the charge with the bat, channeling her passion into performance rather than frustration.

Final Thoughts

Sidra Amin’s reprimand serves as a reminder of the fine line between passion and discipline in international cricket. Her innings against India showcased immense skill, determination, and pride — but her emotional reaction following dismissal briefly overshadowed an otherwise commendable performance.

As the Women’s World Cup 2025 continues, both players and fans alike will be watching closely to see how Pakistan, and especially Sidra, respond to this episode. The upcoming clash against Australia offers a perfect chance for redemption — on and off the field.
