Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation stone for a new international cricket stadium in Varanasi, marking a significant moment in Indian sports. The ceremony was attended by cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri, Sunil Gavaskar, and Dilip Vengsarkar, who presented PM Modi with an Indian cricket team shirt with 'NAMO' written on the back. The event was captured on video and shared on social media, celebrating the occasion.
The stadium, being constructed under the supervision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is the third international stadium in Uttar Pradesh and the first to be built with BCCI's involvement. The Central Government's Smart City Mission is supporting the project. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his gratitude to BCCI and PM Modi for this gift to the state, stating that it will provide a platform for cricket enthusiasts in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The stadium, located near the Ring Road in the Rajatalab area, will have a capacity of 30,000 spectators and seven pitches. The Uttar Pradesh government has spent Rs 121 crore on acquiring the land for the stadium, while BCCI will invest Rs 330 crore in its construction. The stadium is expected to be completed by December 2025 and will feature a spectator gallery resembling the steps of the ghats in Varanasi.
