The captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, has found himself in a predicament as he recently received three traffic citations for speeding on the Mumbai-Pune expressway, situated 90 kilometres from Mumbai, India's financial hub.
As per the authorities from the Pune Traffic Department, Rohit Sharma was caught driving at extremely high speeds, consistently exceeding 200 kilometres per hour, with occasional bursts reaching up to 215 kilometres per hour. He was behind the wheel of his Lamborghini while en route to Pune, where he intended to join his fellow teammates in preparation for their upcoming ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh.
This incident has raised concerns among traffic officials who are apprehensive about the safety implications of such reckless driving. In light of this, one official closely involved in the matter suggested that Sharma should consider travelling with the team in their bus, which comes with a police escort for added security.
It's worth noting that the incident occurred during a special three-month campaign initiated by Maharashtra's transport commissioner, Vivek Bhimanwar, to crack down on various traffic violations, including speeding, improper lane changes, mobile phone usage while driving, and failure to wear seat belts on the Mumbai-Pune highways, as well as the Pune-Kolhapur highway.
Meanwhile, the Indian cricket team is gearing up to take advantage of the favourable batting conditions at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. They have a reasonably good track record at this venue, having played seven ODIs and emerged victorious in four of them.
