A new era for the Punjab Kings has begun with the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. During a Sunday episode of the famous reality show Bigg Boss, Bollywood actor Salman Khan made the announcement excitingly and uniquely. To make the moment even more memorable for the fans, Iyer, Yuzivendra Chahal, and Shashank Singh joined Salman on the sets.
The 30-year-old Shreyas Iyer thanked the Punjab Kings leadership for believing in him during his career. “That the team has put its trust in me is an honour. Working with Coach Ponting once more excites me. With a fantastic blend of establishing players and promising newcomers, the squad looks to be powerful. “ I hope to repay the leadership's trust in us to deliver our maiden title,” Iyer said.
Coach Ricky Ponting’s Support
Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Punjab Kings, expressed his excitement at collaborating with Iyer once again. “Shreyas is quite intelligent about the match. The squad will be able to deliver thanks to his shown quantities as captain. I've liked working with Iyer in the IPL in the past, and I'm excited to do it once again. I'm looking forward to the upcoming season because of his leadership and the potential in the team,” Ponting said.

Satish Menon, the CEO of Punjab Kings, also commented on the appointment. “We were pleased with the outcome of the auction and had chosen Shreyas to be our captain. Iyer’s IPL 2025 Appointment
It was expected that Iyer would be appointed captain of the Punjab Kings following winning the auction in the November IPL Mega Auction for a huge amount of Rs. 26.75 Cr. Following Rishabh Pant, who sold to the Lucknow Super Giants for Rs. 27 crore, Iyer became the second most expensive player at the auction as a result of this well-known obtaining them. Intending to rebuild their team under new head coach Ricky Ponting, Punjab Kings went into the auction with a maximum price of Rs. 110.5 Cr.
Punjab Kings’ Auction Strategy
Only two players were kept by the team- Parbhsmiran Singh and Shashank Singh. They calculated busy using their budget. Sunrisers Hyderabad made a last bid of Rs. 18 Cr., however, they were able to use their Right-to-Match(RTM) card to buy Arshdeep Singh.
