Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, began his title defence at the Diamond League with a remarkable win at the season's opening leg on Friday. The Indian athlete dominated a field of tough competitors with a world-leading and fourth personal-best throw of 88.67m. Chopra made an impressive start in his first attempt, throwing 88.67m and securing the top position, which he maintained till the end of the event.
This was his second appearance at the Qatar Sports Club, after finishing fourth in 2018. Jakub Vadlejch from the Czech Republic, who won a silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics and the Doha Diamond League last year with a 90.88m throw, came close to Chopra's record with a second-round throw of 88.63m. Despite Neeraj Chopra's personal best being 89.94m, he was unable to sustain his initial level of performance.
He threw 86.04m and 85.47m in his second and third attempts, respectively, before committing a foul in the fourth. On his fifth and sixth attempts, he was able to achieve throws of 84.37m and 85.62m, respectively. Chopra's victory in the season's first leg was a great start to the season, having already won the 2022 Diamond League Final trophy in Switzerland last year. His performance in the first leg demonstrated that he is still in top form and a strong contender for future competitions.
