As the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) prepare for a major overhaul in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction, the franchise has announced the appointment of Zaheer Khan as its new mentor.
LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka expressed his enthusiasm about bringing Zaheer Khan on board. Having been impressed with Zaheer's performance as a player, coach, and strategist, Goenka remarked, "We are thrilled to welcome him to the team. We believe his involvement will greatly benefit LSG's future." This announcement was made during a press conference.
Zaheer’s Vision for LSG
Zaheer Khan, who previously worked with the Mumbai Indians, acknowledged the potential within LSG, despite its relatively short history of three years. He highlighted the franchise’s consistency in reaching the playoffs as a positive sign. "This level of consistency in such a competitive environment is encouraging. It gives me confidence as I look forward to contributing to LSG’s success," Zaheer stated.
Zaheer also shared his plans for the franchise, focusing on creating an environment where players can express themselves freely and achieve victories. He emphasized his commitment to establishing a winning culture and enhancing decision-making processes. In addition to his mentoring role, Zaheer will also serve as the team's bowling coach.
Future Plans
Sanjiv Goenka noted that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce its player retention policy ahead of the mega auction. However, he chose not to reveal any specifics about the team’s composition at this time.
Goenka also confirmed that key coaching staff members will remain with the team. Coach Justin Langer, assistant coach Lance Klusener, and fielding coach Jonty Rhodes will continue their roles with LSG.
Regarding recent interactions with LSG captain K.L. Rahul, Goenka said, "K.L. has been a vital part of the Super Giants family since the beginning. He is like family to me and my son, Shashwat, and will continue to be an integral part of the team."
