An exciting 2-0 victory over Arsenal guaranteed Liverpool a spot in the FA Cup fourth round. Arsenal missed multiple opportunities to score, which added stress to the tense game. In the 80th minute, Luis Diaz clinched the victory in stoppage time after Polish defender Jakub Kiwior gave Liverpool the lead with an own goal. Being able to psychologically damage one of their primary championship competitors was why this victory was so important for Liverpool. Because of their recent bad play, Arsenal is now five points behind Liverpool in the title race and is not eligible for the FA Cup or League Cup.
Arsenal's annoyance and Klopp's joy
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp celebrated the win warmly, knowing its significance. He praised Arsenal's determination in finishing the game, given their performance. However, Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta lamented his team's missed chances. Although the team was close to victory, he felt the performance was poor.
Arsenal's missed chances and Liverpool's determination
Arsenal had many scoring chances, but Liverpool rode their luck all game. A stunning save by Liverpool's Alisson Becker stopped Ben White's strong run after Martin Odegaard's shot hit the crossbar. Arsenal's recklessness continued as Bukayo Saka volleyed over from a precarious position, and Kai Havertz missed two good chances. Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota had scoring chances as Liverpool regained their groove. Liverpool won due to their perseverance and ability to exploit Arsenal's mistakes.
De Bruyne Returns to City
Liverpool's win was the weekend's highlight, but Kevin De Bruyne's long-awaited return for Manchester City was equally memorable. After missing August with hamstring pain, De Bruyne returned as a substitute in City's 5-0 win over Huddersfield. After Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden scored, City had a comfortable lead before De Bruyne arrived. City scored three more goals, including one by De Bruyne. Guardiola was glad to see De Bruyne back, praising his talent and role in winning games.
Further FA Cup results
Third-tier Bolton drew struggling Premier League Luton 0-0 in the FA Cup. Nottingham Forest rallied to draw level with League One rivals Blackpool after being behind by two goals. West Ham and lower-tier Bristol City also drew 1-1.
Liverpool's win over Arsenal may have changed their season-long pursuit of four titles. In addition to qualifying for the Europa League last 16, they meet Fulham in the League Cup semi-final first leg. Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup champions Manchester City need De Bruyne back.
