He then doubled Argentina's lead 10 minutes later with a fierce finish. These goals took Messi's tally to 31 in World Cup qualifiers, surpassing Uruguay's Luis Suarez as CONMEBOL's leading scorer.
Messi expressed his admiration for the Argentina team, stating that they are close to being the best in history. He also mentioned that the team has grown and gained confidence since winning the World Cup. Coach Lionel Scaloni praised the understanding between Messi and his teammates, emphasising that the team benefits from having Messi on the pitch.
In other World Cup qualifiers, Uruguay defeated Brazil 2-0, with Neymar leaving the field due to a potential knee injury. Venezuela had a convincing 3-0 victory over Chile, Paraguay won 1-0 against Bolivia, and Ecuador drew 0-0 with Colombia.
Argentina, currently leading the CONMEBOL standings, will face Uruguay on November 16 and Brazil five days later. Peru's upcoming matches are against Bolivia and Venezuela.
Messi, who has previously announced his intention to retire before the 2026 World Cup, continues to make a significant impact on the international stage. His record-breaking performance in the World Cup qualifiers further solidifies his status as one of the greatest footballers of all time.
