In Switzerland on Saturday at the Lausanne Diamond League 2023, Neeraj Chopra triumphed in the men's javelin throw category. Neeraj Chopra, a member of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic team, won the javelin throw event at the season-opening Doha leg with an effort of 88.67 metres in May. He then won the event again with an effort of 87.66 metres, which came in his fifth try of the evening. Neeraj Chopra's second tournament of the year and his first since the Doha Diamond League was the Lausanne event. The Indian athlete was forced to withdraw from three events in June: the Ostrava Golden Spike in the Czech Republic, the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland, and the FBK Games in the Netherlands because of a muscle problem he had while training.
"I was a little nervous coming back from an injury. Tonight was a little chilly here. I'm still not at my best, but I sense improvement. I'm relieved that everything is working out nicely for me. A victory is a victory, and I shall accept it gladly." Neeraj Chopra said. Neeraj Chopra, who competed at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise and owns the men's javelin national record of 89.94 metres, fouled his opening throw while Germany's Julian Weber set the bar with an 86.20 metres throw. With his second throw, the Indian star scored his first point with a distance of 83.52 metres, moving up to third place.
Neeraj Chopra moved up to second with his third throw, logging 85.04m, however his fourth throw was a no mark. With his penultimate effort, the Indian champion eventually secured the top spot with an 87.66 mark, which was good enough to win. Weber ended in second place with a final throw of 87.03 metres, while the current world leader and silver medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, came in third with a mark of 86.13 metres. Anderson Peters, the current world javelin champion from Grenada (82.23m), struggled throughout the competition and came in sixth. Lausanne Diamond League 2023 tries by Neeraj Chopra: 84.15m, 83.52m, 85.04m, No mark, 87.66m
Neeraj Chopra gained eight additional qualifying points during the Lausanne leg thanks to his first-place result. The Indian presently holds the top spot in the men's javelin throw qualification standings for the 2023 Diamond League with 16 points from two contests. For participating in each Diamond League leg, athletes get points rather than medals. At the conclusion of all legs, the best eight competitors in each event will advance to the Diamond League Final in Eugene in September. Neeraj Chopra won the men's javelin throw championship last year in Zurich, making him the first Indian athlete to do so.
