American tennis player Jessica Pegula advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in Cancun with a straight-set victory over Maria Sakkari. Pegula, the oldest player in the tournament at 29, had already secured her spot in the semis, while Sakkari was already eliminated.
Pegula dominated the match from the start, taking advantage of Sakkari's 35 unforced errors and eight double faults. She won the match without dropping a set, despite the challenging windy conditions.
Pegula credited her success to playing in the middle of the court and minimising mistakes. In her group matches, she also upset world number one, Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka, who is vying for the year-end number-one ranking, faced a crucial match against Elena Rybakina for the second semi-final spot.
The two players have a history, with Sabalenka winning their previous four encounters before Rybakina won their last two meetings. Sabalenka is not only aiming for the tournament title but also the year-end number one ranking, which is still within reach for Poland's Iga Swiatek.
