Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, an Indian men's doubles team, battled valiantly to reach the final, while HS Prannoy was eliminated in the men's singles semifinals of the Indonesia Open World Tour Super 1000 competition on Saturday. Seventh-seeded Satwik and Chirag, who won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, overcame a game deficit to defeat Min Hyuk Kang and Seung Jae Seo of Korea 17-21, 21-19, 21-18 to go to their first Super-1000 final. With the victory, they improved to 3-2 over Kang and Seo overall. Satwik and Chirag, ranked sixth in the world, will take against either Indonesia's Pramudya Kusumawardana and Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan or Malaysia's second seeds Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh.
Prannoy lost 15-21, 15-21 to first seed Viktor Axelsen of Denmark because he was unable to respond to the occasion. Prannoy started off by playing catch-up. He occasionally displayed flashes of brilliance while relying on his cross-court smashes, but Axelsen's drop shots and excellent court covering allowed him to seize the lead. The scenario played out the same way in the following game, with Axelsen maintaining his advantage and winning both the game and the match in precisely the same way. In contrast to his two victories over the Dane, Prannoy had suffered six losses to him on the international stage. The men's doubles started off well-matched before the Korean team jumped up to a 6-3 lead. After giving up the lead, Satwik and Chirag were compelled to play a catch-up game.
Before Kang and Seo maintained their calm to win the opening game thanks to an unforced error, the Indians used their aggressive play to cut the score to 15-19 and then 17-20. After the change of ends, the Indians were more focused and quickly led 6-3. In the second game, they quickly increased their advantage to 11-4 with a flurry of quick strokes and body slams. The Koreans' poor line calls and unforced mistakes also benefited Satwik and Chirag. However, Kang and Seo persevered and fought their way back into the contest to close the margin to 18-15. However, the Indians kept their composure and played shrewdly to win the second game and even the score.
The opening five points of the final were close before Satwik and Chirag scored seven straight points to take the lead 12-5. When the scores were 16-16, the Koreans made a valiant effort to rally, but Satwik and Chirag came through and won the game and the match.
