Scoring a double century in the one day international format stands as one of the greatest achievements in the sport for a batsman. Over the years, there have been several cricketers who have attempted to achieve this unique feat, however, only a few have succeeded in scoring a double ton in an ODI. It speaks not only of genius and tenacity but also of excellence over opponents.
There have been very few batsmen who have ever managed to reach the ODI cricketing world so far. 7 Indian cricketers have scored two hundred runs in One Day Internationals, out of 12 instances of double centuries within the format. Surprisingly, Indian batters have impressed the most in this regard, accounting for seven of these remarkable performances.
Rohit Sharma’s Historical Contests in ODIs
Rohit Sharma, who currently leads Team Indian in the longer formats, and has hit maximum double hundreds in ODI cricket- three to his name. Rohit hit his maiden double hundred against Australia in 2013 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, scoring 209 runs with 16 sixes and 12 fours. He also became the first player to hit a six in the match, while becoming the overall fourth batsman to score a double century in ODIs.
His next two double hundreds came against Sri Lanka. Rohit scored an unbelievable 264 in 2014 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, which is the highest ever by an individual in ODIs. He scored his third double hundred in 2017 by remaining unbeaten and scoring 208 at Mohali. This has regularly placed Rohit as one of the most formidable openers in one-day cricket.
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar’s First Ever!
No conversation on double centuries in ODIs can be completed without mentioning the name of the ‘God of Cricket’, Sachin Tendulkar. The master blaster was the first to score a double century in ODIs. He made this record in 2010 against South Africa. Tendulkar's 200* is a testament for upcoming generations, teaching batsmen around the world to follow the pace and skills. Indeed, it was one thrilling test of skillful patience and precision that was supported with 25 fours and 3 sixes.
Virender Sehwag’s Fiery Double Century
Virender Sehwag found his place in the limelight after scoring a double hundred against West Indies in the year 2011. He scored 219 runs off 149 balls that was powered by 25 fours and 7 sixes in the match held at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore. Being an aggressive cricketer with a bold attitude towards the game, his batting style has got a huge popularity in the sport. His knock was the second double century in ODI cricket after the legendary knock by Sachin Tendulkar.
New Age Cricketers Create New Records
Young Indian star Ishan Kishan has created history as he became the fastest man to hit a double century in ODIs. In just 126 balls, Kishan registered the unique record against Bangladesh back in 2022. His approach and shot selection were full of aggression and fearlessness as his knock was powered by 24 fours and 10 sixes.
Shubman Gill, another of the bright young cricketing stars of India, added his name to the prestigious list recently in 2023 by scoring a double century against New Zealand. At the age of 23, he became the youngest player to score a double century in the ODIs. He achieved the mark with a brilliant knock of 208 runs off 149 balls, with 19 boundaries and 9 sixes.
