Tuesday's third One-day International saw Team India demolish South Africa by seven wickets to win the series 2-1. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan and his team have matched Australia's world record by winning the series.
On Tuesday, 11th October, team India, captained by Shikhar Dhawan, defeated South Africa in the third and final One Day International (ODI) in the just-concluded bilateral series. In the series-deciding game at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sunder ran riot as the Proteas crumbled for a meagre total of 99. India defeated the Proteas 2-1 at home thanks to Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten effort of 28 (23) and Shubman Gill's 49 off 57 balls.
For his outstanding bowling performance, star spinner Kuldeep was named the Player of the Match. Team India has also managed to match Australia's incredible achievement in international cricket with the series victory against South Africa. India's victory over South Africa by seven wickets marked their 38th triumph of the 2022 season. Australia, a former global champion, set a record in 2003 by winning 38 games. By winning the three-match series against South Africa on Tuesday, the Men in Blue tied Australia's record of 38 victories.
Australia won 30 ODIs and 8 Tests in 2003 under the direction of Ricky Ponting. And now, Team India has surpassed their 2017 record of 37 victories. Under the able leadership of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, the Asian tigers won five consecutive matches against South Africa (two Tests and three ODIs) to start the 2022 season.
In its busiest-ever international season, India featured seven different captains throughout 56 games due to workload management and COVID-19 issues. Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Shikhar Dhawan led the side in the games that were not skippered by full-time captain Rohit Sharma.
Given that India has a minimum of 11 confirmed matches left this year, it may continue to improve its record. Here's looking forward to capturing the fortress of Gabba again!
