Rachin Ravindra, the emerging star of the 2023 World Cup, made headlines once again with his brilliant performance in New Zealand's final group stage match against Sri Lanka. Playing in Bengaluru, Ravindra, who has local connections to the city, received tremendous support from the crowd. In a poetic moment, he achieved a remarkable feat by setting a new record for the most runs on a World Cup debut.
During his innings against Sri Lanka, Ravindra surpassed England's Jonny Bairstow, who previously held the record with 532 runs in his maiden World Cup appearance in 2019. Not only did Ravindra etch his name in the record books, but he also claimed the top spot in the list of highest run-getters in the ongoing tournament. He surpassed Quinton de Kock and Virat Kohli, although both South Africa and India have yet to play their final group game.
Ravindra's impressive start to the tournament included a century against defending champion England in the opening game. He followed it up with two more centuries against Australia and Pakistan, along with two half-centuries. His consistency and ability to perform under pressure make him a crucial asset for the New Zealand team as they aim to secure a place in the knockout stages of the World Cup.
The bowlers from New Zealand bowled out the struggling Sri Lankan team for just 171 runs during the encounter. Mitchell Santner, Rachin Ravindra, and Lockie Ferguson each grabbed two wickets, while Trent Boult claimed three. With 51 runs, Kusal Perera led Sri Lanka's run scorers, while Dilshan Madushanka (19) and Maheesh Theekshana (38*) combined well to help the side score fairly.
