ICC Takes Action: Suspends Sri Lanka Cricket over government interference

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced in a statement on Friday night that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) had breached its obligations as a member, in particular the requirement to manage its affairs autonomously without government intervention.

According to ICC's official website in its statement, the ICC said: "The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in due course."

According to the ESPN report, the ICC's regular quarterly meetings are planned to take place in Ahmedabad from November 18 to 21. However, the ICC board conducted an online meeting on Friday to discuss the issue of government interference in various aspects, including administration, finances, and national team affairs, within SLC. The ICC Board is set to meet on Nov 21, after which the future course of action is expected to be more clear.

Sri Lanka is set to host the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup in January and February 2024.

In the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, the Sri Lanka men's team has struggled, winning only two out of nine matches and currently holding the eighth position in the points table. They have three more league phase matches remaining.

On Monday, Sri Lanka's sports minister, Roshan Ranasinghe, removed the SLC board and put an interim committee led by Arjuna Ranatunga in charge. However, Sri Lanka's courts effectively reinstated the original board a day later by issuing a 14-day stay order on the official notice that dissolved the board.

Since then, the matters regarding Sri Lanka Cricket have been extensively discussed in the country's parliament. But as of Friday, when the ICC suspension was imposed, it was the elected SLC board under Silva's leadership that was responsible for running cricket in the country.
