ICC Awards 2023; Virat, Shubman and Shami Shortlisted for Men's ODI cricketer of the year list

The International Cricket Council (ICC)  has shortlisted the players for ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the year for The ICC Awards 2023. The nominations for this awards include Indian Trio Shubhman Gill, Virat Kohli and Mohammad Shami and one New Zealand player Daryl Mitchell, on the basis of their outstanding individual performances in men's  ODI cricket over the past year. 

The ICC Awards 2023 have additional categories such as ICC Men’s and Women’s Associate Cricketers of the Year, the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award, and the ICC Umpire of the Year, totaling 13 prizes. Apart from individual awards, the ICC Voting Academy will determine five ICC Teams of the Year, recognizing the standout XIs in men’s and women’s international cricket for 2023.The ICC is revealing the shortlisted players for all nine categories in the ICC Awards 2023 between January 3 and 5. Only 6 nominations have been revealed till Jan 4, others are likely to be revealed on Jan 5.

Suryakumar Yadav and Yashashvi Jaiswal also made a way in the ICC awards nominations in the categories, ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year and ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year respectively. Regrettably No Indian Female cricketer could make it in the three ICC ‘women’ nominations revealed by ICC.

Nominees were chosen by a panel of cricket writers and broadcasters, evaluating on-field performances and overall achievements in international cricket throughout the year. The winners in each category will be determined through a combination of fan voting results and selections from the ICC Voting Academy. Winners of the ICC Awards 2023 will be announced later in January 2024. 

Shubhman Gill

Shubman Gill dominated the MRF Tyres ICC Men’s ODI batter rankings in 2023, surpassing Pakistan’s Babar Azam being at the top for a significant period. He scored an impressive 1584 runs throughout 2023 and earned recognition with two ICC Men’s Player of the Month Awards.

His outstanding performance included five centuries and nine half-centuries in the ODI format throughout the year.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has a wide range of achievements in the year 2023, From being the first player in the world to achieve 50 centuries in ODIs, surpassing Sachin Tendulkars record to a stellar performance in the ICC men’s World Cup 2023, earning him the Player of the Tournament title at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.  He made six ODI centuries in the twelve-month period, surpassing all other players in this remarkable feat.

Virat has already achieved this award in 2012, 2017 and 2018. Presently, He stands with South Africa’s AB de Villiers, both are three time winners. He has been once again nominated, if he wins, this would be his fourth time achieving ODI cricketer of the year award.

Mohammad Shami

Strike bowler Mohammed Shami, shocked everyone by delivering a stellar performance in World Cup 2023 as being the top wicket keeper. His performance throughout the world cup has been very remarkable. He claimed the third-highest number of ODI wickets in the year (43). 

Shami claimed 24 wickets in merely seven matches at a remarkable average of 10.70.
