Canadian Formula 1 driver Lance Stroll endured a terrifying crash during the qualifying session for the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. The incident occurred on September 16, during the Q1 session at the Marina Bay circuit. Stroll lost control of his Aston Martin car on the 8th lap, resulting in a high-speed collision with the track barriers.
Despite the severity of the crash, Lance Stroll remarkably emerged unscathed and was able to leave his heavily damaged car without assistance. Medical professionals on-site cleared him to return to the paddock. However, Aston Martin reported that Stroll was still experiencing soreness following the high-impact accident.
Due to the substantial repairs required on his car, Lance Stroll decided, in agreement with the Aston Martin team, not to participate in the Singapore Grand Prix race scheduled for the following day. This was a precautionary measure to prioritize his recovery. Stroll's focus is now on regaining full fitness ahead of the Japanese Grand Prix, which takes place in the following week.
Before the crash, Lance Stroll was slated to start the Singapore Grand Prix in the 20th and final position on the starting grid. Ferrari's Carlos Sainz secured pole position for the race, marking his second consecutive pole. Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc began from the third position on the grid, with George Russell of Mercedes starting in second place. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, also driving for Mercedes, took the fifth spot on the grid, behind McLaren's Lando Norris.
The crash marked a shock for Red Bull Racing fans, as Max Verstappen, who had won eight consecutive races and 10 of the last 11, could only secure 11th place during qualifying. His teammate, Sergio Perez, started from the 13th position on the grid after failing to make it to the Q3 session despite an impressive start in the first session.
