In a gripping start to their FIH Hockey5s Women’s World Cup campaign, the Indian women's hockey team secured a narrow 5-4 victory over Poland in the opening Pool C match. The match, held on Wednesday, showcased a stellar performance by Deepika Soreng and Mumtaz Khan, each scoring two goals.
Dynamic First Half: Mumtaz and Deepika Shine
The Indian team displayed agility right from the start, taking the lead in the fourth minute with Mumtaz's field goal. Deepika doubled the lead just two minutes later with another impressive field strike. Poland, however, fought back with goals from Julia Kucharska and captain Marlena Rybacha, levelling the score at 2-2 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Mumtaz's second goal ensured India finished the first half ahead, leading 3-2.
Thrilling Second Half: India Holds On
The second half began quietly, with both teams preventing each other from scoring. Mariana Kujur extended India's lead with a brilliant finish. Despite Poland's attempts to stage a comeback, India maintained the pressure, and Deepika scored again to secure a two-goal lead. With just a minute left, Monika Polewczak scored for Poland, setting the final score at 5-4 in favour of India. Despite the late surge from Poland, the Indian team managed to hold on to their lead, marking a positive start to their campaign.
The Indian women's hockey team will face the United States of America in their next match, aiming to continue their winning momentum in the tournament.
