It all happened on Sunday in Mumbai, the Indian women’s cricket team scripted history by registering their first-ever win against Australia in the history of women’s test cricket. India won this match by eight wickets. Recalling the previous test matches that happened between India and Australia, India had four losses and six draws against Australia.
With the match taking place in Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede stadium, India lost the toss but the dominant bowling performance shown by the Indian team on the opening day was spectacular. Pooja Vastrakar restricted the Aussies to a target of 219. India then put up a score of 400 plus on the board and took a lead of 406 runs. Though Australia had a fighting comeback the Indian spinners restricted them to 261. India to win just required a chasing target of 75 to script history but the early dismissals of Shefali Verma and Richa Gosh did not stop the Indian team from believing in themselves. Later on, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues led the team to a famous victory.
Tahlia McGranth got a half-century for Australia but it did not make that big an impact for the Aussies since Sneh Rana’s 4/63. India all-rounder Sneh Rana took a 7-wicket haul in the match and opening batter Smriti Mandhana compiled 112 runs. In the space of two test matches, the debutants for the Indian Women’s Cricket Team performed extremely well with Jemimah Rodrigues scoring two half-centuries in two matches. It was also seen in the test against England the all-round performance shown by Deepti Sharma as she picked up 9 wickets in the match.
India are next playing Australia in three ODIs and three T201s in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai respectively.
