Harry Brook will captain the England cricket team in their upcoming one-day international (ODI) series against Australia, following the exclusion of Jos Buttler due to injury. Buttler, 34, has been nursing a right calf injury that forced him to miss both the T20 series and The Hundred tournament. Unfortunately, his recovery has not progressed as expected, ruling him out of the five-match 50-over series.
In addition to Buttler, left-arm seamer Josh Hull has also been withdrawn from the ODI squad due to a quad injury. Hull, who recently made his Test debut against Sri Lanka, is expected to recover in time for England's tour of Pakistan in October. His absence from the squad adds to the list of key players missing for the Australia series.
All-rounder Liam Livingstone, who played a significant part in England’s triumph in the moment T20 against Australia in Cardiff, has been included to the 15-man ODI squad. Livingstone’s inclusion strengthens England’s lineup as they prepare for the first ODI, scheduled to take place at Trent Bridge on Thursday, 19 September.
Jos Buttler expressed his disappointment at missing the series, stating that his recovery has been slower than anticipated. "It is a shame to miss some cricket, but I want to get it right. There is still a lot to look forward to," Buttler told Sky Sports. He added that he is focused on making this phase of his career the most enjoyable yet.
Brook’s First Opportunity to Captain England
The 25-year-old Harry Brook will captain England for the first time, marking a significant milestone in his international career, which began just 18 months ago in the ODI format. Brook, who has shown remarkable performances in Test and T20 cricket, now has the chance to lead the team despite his relatively modest ODI record, averaging 29.07 in 15 innings.
Brook, who captained Northern Superchargers in The Hundred earlier this year, has drawn inspiration from the leadership of England’s Test captain, Ben Stokes. "I’ve played with Stokesy quite a bit, and watching the way he goes about things, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t learn a few things from him," Brook said.
Phil Salt, who led England in the T20 series against Australia, will also feature in the ODI squad. Additionally, England will be coached by interim head coach Marcus Trescothick for the series, with Brendon McCullum taking over white-ball duties in January.
Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Reece Topley, John Turner.
