A medium-fast bowler, Johnson made a notable impact in the domestic circuit before representing India in two Test matches in 1996. His breakthrough came during the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season, where he claimed 23 wickets from five games at an impressive average of 22.86, playing a crucial role in Karnataka's tournament victory.
Johnson's international debut came in a one-off Test against Australia in Delhi, where he replaced the injured Javagal Srinath. Although he took only one wicket—dismissing Michael Slater—in India's victory, his performance earned him a spot on the tour of South Africa. He played his second and final Test match at Kingsmead, Durban.
While his international career was brief, Johnson's first-class career was more substantial. He took 125 wickets from 39 matches at an average of 28.63 and even notched up a first-class century.
David Johnson's contributions to Indian cricket, both at the domestic and international levels, will be fondly remembered by fans and fellow cricketers alike.
