End of an Era: How Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal Story Ended

For more than two decades, the shirt with the number seven was the one around which Portugal’s hopes were built. On Thursday, in a five-minute video message posted to his social media accounts, Cristiano Ronaldo took it off for the last time. The 41-year-old has retired from international football, ending a 23-year career with Portugal that rewrote the record books, but his farewell comes after a public falling-out with national team coach Jorge Jesus, which has left the end of the story feeling unfinished.

He said, “Portugal estará sempre em mim,” which means “Portugal will always be in me.”

The Numbers Behind the Legend

Ronaldo leaves the national team with figures that no other male player in the history of international football has matched.

  • Appearances: 234 caps for Portugal.
  • Goals: 146 international goals, the most ever scored by a men’s international footballer.
  • Career span: 23 years in a Portugal shirt.
  • Trophies: The 2016 European Championship, which Portugal won in France, and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Those honours remain the high-water mark of Portuguese football. The Euro 2016 triumph, the country’s first major tournament win, is widely regarded as the defining achievement of his international career, even though he was injured in the final.

What Ronaldo Said

In his message, Ronaldo spoke with emotion about his time with the national team. Reports say he also acknowledged that he should never have left the Portugal camp during the recent dispute, adding that he did so despite what he described as an “absolute breach of trust” from Jesus.

How the Row With Jorge Jesus Unfolded

The retirement follows a clash that played out publicly during the previous international break. According to reports, Jesus decided to bench Ronaldo for Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway. Ronaldo then left the national camp, which raised immediate doubts about whether he would play for his country again. In October, the dispute between the Portuguese Football Federation and the player became a major talking point, with debate over whether the coach should drop his superstar.

The announcement came shortly before the official announcement of Portugal’s squad for the next international break.

I could not find a detailed, independently confirmed account of exactly what was said between the two men, so this article does not go beyond what has been publicly reported.

A Career That Spanned Generations

Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in 2003 as a teenager and went on to play at multiple European Championships and World Cups, becoming the country’s captain and its all-time leading scorer. He remained the central figure of the team as it moved through different generations of talent. In recent years, he continued to play at club level in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, while also leading the national team’s attack well into his late thirties and forties.

His longevity was itself part of the story. In 2024, he said he intended to carry on until he no longer felt motivated and that he would be the first to leave when he could no longer contribute. He also said he did not see himself going into coaching after his playing days.

The Messi Question

No discussion of Ronaldo’s career can avoid the long rivalry with Lionel Messi, which has shaped the way a generation of fans sees the sport. Ronaldo’s retirement from international football as the men’s record scorer will inevitably be cited in future debates on who was the greater player. The two men have followed very different paths with their national teams, and the argument is unlikely ever to be settled.

What Happens Next for Portugal?

Portugal now faces life without its greatest player for the first time since the early 2000s. Analysts say the squad has a deep pool of talent, and one pundit commented that the country can succeed without him and that the time was right for him to step away, though he also ruled out a farewell match. Whether the federation tries to arrange a proper send-off remains to be seen.

For the team, the immediate questions are tactical and psychological: who takes over as the main striker and as captain, and how Jesus manages the dressing room after such a highly public episode.

Does This Mean the End of Ronaldo’s Playing Career?

No. The retirement applies only to international football. Ronaldo continues to play at club level, and his club career, which has produced a very large number of goals, is not affected by this announcement.

The Legacy

A player who arrived in the Portuguese team as a skilful young winger and left as the sport’s most prolific international scorer will be remembered for his goals, his work ethic and his refusal to slow down. The circumstances of his exit are not what many supporters would have wanted, but the record he leaves behind is untouched.
